Member of the Royal Society of Canada and Knight in the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of the French Republic, André Gaudreault is a professor in the Département d’histoire de l’art et d’études cinématographiques at the Université de Montréal and holds the Canada Research Chair in Cinema and Media Studies. He is the founder of the Laboratoire CinéMédias, under which he heads the International Research Partnership on Cinema Technology (TECHNÈS), the Programme de recherche sur l’archéologie et la généalogie du montage/editing (PRAGM/e), the Groupe de recherche sur l’avènement et la formation des identités médiatiques (GRAFIM) and the Observatoire du cinéma au Québec (OCQ). A specialist in early cinema and a pioneer in film narratology, in his current research he is particularly interested in the advent of editing, the phenomenon of opera broadcasts in movie theatres, technological innovations seen from an “archaeological” perspective and the impact of the digital on the media universe. His books include From Plato to Lumière (2005 [1988 and 1999]) and Film and Attraction: From Kinematography to Cinema (2011 [2008]). He is co-author of The End of Cinema? A Medium in Crisis in the Digital Age (with Philippe Marion, 2015 [2013]) and of Le récit cinématographique (with François Jost, 1990 and 2017). His research activities have earned him many distinctions, including a Guggenheim Fellowship (2013), the Léon Gérin award (2017), the Killam Prize in the Humanities (2018), an honorary doctorate from Université Paul-Valéry Montpellier 3 (2019) and an honorary doctorate from Université Rennes 2 (2021).
